Town Hall, Montcarra
Presentation
Where two plateaus meet, those of the regions of Isle Crémieu and Les Terres Froides du Dauphiné, the village of Montcarra stands on "Mount Carra" in northern Isère.
Most of the houses here are made of rammed earth. They are dotted along the main street which rises to an elevation of 375 metres, where a church has stood since 1837. Take the time to let this small rural village reveal the full charm of its hidden heritage. Of the village's 490 hectares, only 15 hectares are built up, while more than 476 hectares form a protected natural area. This includes the Environmentally Senstive Area of Gôle lake, noteworthy for its patchwork of habitats which shelter some protected animal and plant species. Besides the cattle farms, there are two stud farms that form a lush green landscape of meadows dotted with grazing horses.
