Chamagnieu is 8 km away from La Verpillère and about 30 km from Lyon. This village on the south-western tip of the Isle-Crémieu region has a distinguishing geological feature; its limestone hills on the southern border of Jura taper down to the fertile plain of La Bourbre, which used to be marshland. Chamagnieu stands on a late-carboniferous geological streak which starts at Givors above a shallow crystalline layer that connects to the Massif Central. Its geological curiosity is one of its hills, a small massif of granite raised up by this Miocene layer.
This granitic massif was exploited until the end of the 20th century. Thanks to a very deep lake resulting from the raised water table, the old granite quarry is now home to a diving centre.
