St-Sorlin-de-Morestel Bread Furnaces
Presentation
There are no remaining traces of the communal furnace of St-Sorlin, but a pre-1950 furnace built by Claude Allagnat can be seen on the side of the road leading up to the church.
The house just before the furnace (in the uphill direction) belonged to Monsieur Pecquet, the baker. It is a "shaft" furnace, with a low baking vault and a heating chamber underneath from which the flame rises straight up through the shaft. During baking, the opening is covered with a bucket of water, to produce steam which improves the quality of the bread. The furnace can be seen in operation during local festivals.
There is another furnace in working order near the Square Tower.
