Porte de la Loi
Presentation
Mentioned as far back as 1392, this gate was one of the main entrances to Crémieu. It used to have a moat in front of it where the River Vaux flowed but only the empty ditches still remain. The wall walk is decorated with protruding stone brackets known as corbels.
These corbels used to support a hoarding (wooden balcony), another of the gate's defensive features since it allowed the occupants to throw rocks at the enemy without exposing themselves.
The gate was probably closed by a wooden drawbridge.
The four-slope roof is covered in thackstone, flat limestone slabs that are typical of the region's traditional architecture.
Crémieu originally had 9 gates and 14 watchtowers. Only 3 gates still stand today.
