Parmilieu Parish Church of Saint Peter

Presentation

Parmilieu Church dates at least as far back as 1150 when it is mentioned in a brief by Pope Eugène III. The parish is mentioned in a pouillé of the diocèse of Lyon dating from 1225. The current church may have been built in the late 15th or early 16th century.
Remains from this first period can be seen in the chancel (pillars, piscina, tablet and arch bases). The side chapels were modified in the second half of the 17th century, with the construction of a sacristy for the north chapel and, on the south side, the creation within the parish church of the chapel of Saint James (with another piscina and a second credence).

In 1790, Parmilieu church reported to the diocese of Grenoble. It was transferred to the parish of Amblagnieu in 1801 and achieved its own parish status in 1846. Extension work - to add a new western bay "without modifying the architecture" - was approved in October 1853 by the new fabric of the parish and entrusted to Hughes Quenin in 1861. The old facade still has visible scars from that work.

In April 1887, the parish council pointed out the building's poor state of repair. A first reconstruction project was rejected by the town council in 1893. A second project also failed in 1902 due to a lack of resources. The thackstone roof of the belltower and the nave was laid at a later date.
