  • François Guiguet autoportrait

French painter François Joseph Guiguet was born in Corbelin (Isère) on 8th January 1860 and died in the same village on 3rd September 1937.
François Guiguet was the fifth of twelve children born to Marie Garnier and Joseph Guiguet, a carpenter. He attended the village primary school. His father taught him carpentry as his future trade, but he demonstrated artistic flair at a very early age and his family placed no obstacle in his way.
In 1876, Doctor Gauthier, who was visiting, advised François' parents to talk to the painter Augustin Ravier (1814-1895), who lived in Morestel. Ravier instantly saw talent in the young Guiguet's work. For three years, he offered his young student precious advice about varying drawing tools, remaining true to values, using pastels to quickly achieve variations in brightness, using oil paints, etc. Thanks to his teachings, Guiguet was already a trained artist when, in 1879, he joined the School of Fine Arts in Lyon on Ravier's recommendation. He followed classes delivered by Michel Dumas, a former student of Ingres.
He made his national art exhibition debut in 1885 with Le Retour du Jeune Tobie (The Return of Young Tobie).
François Guiguet was an intimate painter and portrait artist who became a specialist in painting children and women, capturing expressions and portraying life. He found inspiration at the house where he was born and to which he returned regularly.

The François Guiguet village museum in Corbelin was created thanks to a donation by Louis Guiguet. Its collection included 78 of the artist's oil paintings on canvass, as well as 13 watercolours and over 3,500 drawings. It was inaugurated in 1989 but closed its doors in 2012.
