Land of the artist François-Auguste Ravier

  • Ravier

He was the student of Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny and made friends with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny.
He met Dominique Ingres in Rome.
In 1850 he came to live in Crémieu, then moved to Morestel for its wonderful luminosity in 1868.
He received many artists, offering them advice that resulted in a number of works by painters from the School of Morestel that were similar to his own. In 1876 he discovered the talented young François Guiguet who lived in the neighbouring village of Corbelin. After teaching him for 3 years, he referred him to his friend, Michel Dumas, who had been a fellow student of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Rome and who taught at the national School of Fine Arts in Lyon.
His final years were tainted by the gradual setting in of blindness.
As an admirer of Turner, François-Auguste Ravier enjoyed composing with colour, often playing with shadow and light to the detriment of the lines. For this reason, he can be considered as a forerunner of impressionism (source: Wikipedia)
