In a protected site, the Château de Montplaisant is a remarkable fortified ensemble whose architectural history dates from the 13th to 17th century. Its 15th century chapel is decorated with interesting, classified painted decorations which have been recently restored.
The castle is part of a Protected Site (registered on 08.01.1946). Its facades and roofs are listed historical monuments while its chapel and murals are classified.
The building is an architectural ensemble in the form of a quadrilateral around an inner courtyard. Built in small irregular limestone bricks, it consists of two main buildings. A square tower with the finest masonry marks the north-east corner of the courtyard, with a classic dungeon layout. A projecting massif flanks the south-east corner, while the north-west corner is marked by two turrets. Attached to the main tower, a walkway gives access to the inner courtyard onto which a covered gallery opens, in front of the seigniorial chapel. All the bays are stone.
The tower probably dates from the late 13th or early 14th century, it seems to be the oldest part of the stronghold. The rectangular main building was probably built later, perhaps from the middle of the 14th century. On the first floor there is a ceremonial room with monumental fireplace. From the second half of the 15th century, buildings were erected to the west of the courtyard, and subsequently refitted in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The castrale chapel, on a rectangular base, with barrel vault and illuminated from the west by two trilobate windows, probably dating from this time (15th century); it is accessed by a gallery with columns probably built in the 16th century. The predominantly red and yellow ochre, covers it from floor to ceiling. It was fully restored in 2013.
